Spacemaker Home Extensions wins 2014 project of the year
Spacemaker Home Extensions wins 2014 HIA renovation/addition project of the year.
Spacemaker’s project in Malvern won the over-$1million renovation/addition category and was chosen as overall renovation/addition project of the year.
Last month the project also won the Master Builders Association of Victoria Excellence in Housing Awards 2014 for the best renovation/addition over $1million.
It is a home full of colour and personality, with grand antique Moroccan doors, a fireplace of Grigio Carnico marble, a black granite hearth, exposed timber beams, vaulted ceilings, vibrantly coloured and patterned tiling and custom-made laser-cut screens featuring Middle-Eastern-inspired motifs designed by the owners.
Technology and sustainability were important considerations in maximising the home’s liveability. There is a central lift, electronically controlled louvred roof panels, a 40,000 litre water tank hidden under the driveway and a chute that sorts rubbish from recycling.
The design is sensitive to the original Queen Anne-style facade and heritage streetscape while significantly extending, modernising and enhancing the building to reflect the owners’ cultural heritage and accommodate their lifestyle. The builders used reclaimed bricks, second hand roof tiles and successfully matched the existing external rendered surfaces.
Spacemaker’s design altered and extended each of the home’s three levels. The basement is more than three times the size of the original space and the outdoor entertaining area includes an outdoor kitchen with a wood-fired pizza oven, barbecue and commercial-standard drinks bar.
The HIA judges’ comments include:
“The project is full of hidden gems and innovations.”
“The seamless transition from the old to the new is a credit to the builder.”
“The quality of the workmanship was truly exceptional with superb attention to detail from all trades.”
HIA Victorian Executive Director Gil King noted that the standard of entries and the innovation shown by winning builders in the HIA awards improves each year. “Challenges imposed by restrictive regulations simply have not impacted on the innovation and imagination displayed by our entrants,” he said. “In fact, higher quality of finish and presentation has more often than not compensated for limitations imposed by red-tape and bureaucracy. This renovation/addition project has incorporated the best of the modern era without compromising on the original heritage features. It is simply amazing!”
The HIA CSR Victorian Housing Awards winners for 2014 were announced at Crown Towers on Friday November 7, 2014. The winning project by Spacemaker Home Extensions will be judged against winning projects from other states. National winners will be announced at the 2015 HIA CSR Australian Housing Awards in Queensland in May 2015.
